Currently, I am a fifth-grade teacher at Hillcrest Community School in Bloomington, MN. This is my first year teaching - I was what MNSU referred to as "non-trad student". This means I started school later in life, at the age of 42 to be exact. I received my Bachelors in Elementary Education in May of this year at the age of 46.
I immediately started pursuing my Masters in Educational Technology. This is where I am at now.
Before deciding to pursue a degree in teaching I worked in data management and computer forensics. I did that for about 17 years. During that time, I traveled the country helping law firms organize their data. It was an exciting career but when the traveling ended no one would hire me because I didn't have a degree. So, here I was with a tremendous amount of unique technology skills but nowhere to use them.
One of the things I loved most about my previous career was training new employees and clients on how to use technology so the transition to teacher made sense. Pursuing a Master's in Educational Technology is a logical extension of this career choice. Ultimately, I would love to be an elementary level tech teacher who can co-teach in classrooms. I feel that I can not only help students become more digitally literate but their teachers as well.
When I am not teaching or going to college I hang out with my two children (22-year-old daughter and 27-year-old son) and my two dogs. I like to sew, read, code, play with robots, and prepare for the zombie apocalypse.
