One of my favorite topics in my college psychology class was
the learning theories. It made me think about my own experience in the
classroom as a child. I realized that a
large part of my stress was the rewards system that teachers used. I wasn’t often able to earn the “points”
necessary to receive this type of validation so I always felt a step
behind. Being trained like Pavlov’s dog
just wasn’t my strong suit.
In my current classroom I do not have a system of rewards in
place, in fact I rarely apply grades to anything my students do. Instead I give them feedback and provide them
support in their learning. Their
motivation is intrinsic and driven by their desire to learn and feel successful
– not by my validation of that success.
Working with my team this week was wonderful. We seem to have found our groove as a
team. My team mates make me think more
deeply about the concepts we are working on.
